Cowls keep your neck warm

I first arrived in Berlin in November.  It was cold and despite Matthias picking me up from the airport with my winter coat, I was woefully unprepared for the biting wind and damp.  I can remember looking at all these uber cool Berlin women walking around with oversized cowls that looked so toasty warm and knew that this is what I wanted, perhaps even needed, to keep away the  monotonous grey.  But despite my initial convictions, I never got around to buying or making one.  This year it's on the top of my list of "things to make for me".  Yesterday I went looking for a pattern, and although I didn't find exactly what I wanted, I reckon I'll be able to improvise using bits and pieces of these three;

Burberry Inspired Cowl - The Garter Girl
Mobius Cowl - Bernat Design Studio
Nelly Knits - Chucky Seeded Cowl

I also did some Etsy window shopping (who can resist).  I love colour of the first cowl and think the pockets in the second one are so clever; perfect while waiting for the train or bus when it's not quite cold enough for gloves, but your hands still get cold.

  Little Birdie Design Studio - Etsy shop here

Antika Moda - Etsy shop here
Swak Designs - Etsy Shop here

I guess if I don't get around to knitting mine, I can always buy one on Etsy - the only problem would be choosing which one to buy.

I really like the mustard coloured one. I bought some wool like that to make a scarf but never got around to it. Maybe I will for next winter!

By the way I gave you a blog award :)

funny. i have been wanting to make one of those myself. i started one at the end of the summer and it's just sitting there on the needles, taunting me. i'll take a look at the patterns you chose, maybe one of them will inspire me to start over.

Seconding the 'funny' comment: I, too, have wanted to make one for some time. In fact, I have plans to pick a pattern and get going on one soon. However, I'll be making a smaller, lighter version more in line with the less malicious winters here in Boston... I found a few patterns through the advanced search function at ravelry.com. Check it out if you want more ideas...

Posts like this make me really regret not learning to knit/crochet all those times my grandma tried to teach me.

You definitely should make one - making a thick, cozy cowl is definitely instant gratification! Do you have Ravelry account - finding the perfect cowl pattern is easy peasy!

I've noticed that I could use a cowl lately but I'm not sure about the huge and chunky ones... They're a little overwhelming to me. But I can definitely imagine the women in Berlin all wearing them! I felt so clueless about style and fashion when I was there and seeing all these people look so dressed up.
